Homeopathy treats people or animals with highly diluted substances, in easy to take tablet or liquid form. I like to call them ‘remedies’ rather than ‘medicines’. The remedy works by helping the body to heal itself; it is as if the remedy reminds your body how to get back into balance, rather than taking a medicine that will cause a reaction to stop a specific symptom.
Homeopathy is safe to take alongside medicine prescribed by your doctor and can work well in an integrated approach with conventional health in order to promote your well being.
Homeopathy is based on the principle that you can treat ‘like with like’, that is, a substance which causes symptoms when taken in large doses, can be used in small amounts to treat those same symptoms. For example, drinking too much coffee can cause sleeplessness and agitation, so according to this principle, when made into a homeopathic medicine, it could be used to treat people with these symptoms.
For me homeopathy is about really listening to what your illness means to you and taking the time to match your dis-ease with a remedy that will help you regain balance in all aspects of your life, physically, mentally and emotionally. So the skill of the homeopath is being able to really listen to what is specific to you as an individual.
I like to say to patients that ‘homeopathy treats people, not an illness’.
